Gunpowder tea is one of the better-known steamed green teas from China and has a very distinctive look and taste. It follows the traditional method of green tea production: it is withered, steamed and dried; but it has an additional rolling process which gives the leaves their distinct "pellet" shape that Gunpowder is so famous for.

This famous Chinese tea is known for its characteristic leaf shape where the leaves have been rolled prior to drying to form loose pearl of pure green tea. This method protects against breakage of the leaf and helps to preserve more flavour and aroma than some flat leaf varieties.

When brewed, the leaves produce a dark-golden liquor and slightly sweet aroma. To taste, this tea is a strong, delicious and refreshing cup with a delicate, almost fruity finish with tones of apple and grape.

About

The shape isn't the only thing different about Gunpowder tea. The rolling of the leaves cause pockets of fresher green tea flavour to be preserved for longer than flat-leaf varieties, so Gunpowder ages excellently whilst still retaining those bright and refreshing green tea notes.

About Chinese Gunpowder

Chinese Gunpowder tea is a type of green tea known for its distinctive rolled leaf pellets, resembling small gunpowder pellets, hence the name.

The tea leaves are tightly rolled into small, pellet-like shapes. The rolling process helps preserve the tea's freshness and protect it from physical damage.

Chinese Gunpowder tea is traditionally produced in Zhejiang province in China. The region's climate and soil contribute to the unique characteristics of the tea.

After harvesting, the tea leaves undergo a process that includes withering, steaming or pan-firing, rolling, and drying. The rolling process is crucial for creating the characteristic pellet shape.

Chinese Gunpowder tea has a bold and slightly smoky flavor with a hint of sweetness. The tight rolling of the leaves helps preserve the tea's natural oils, contributing to its distinctive taste.

To brew Chinese Gunpowder tea, use water that is around 71–85°C (160–185°F). The pellets unfurl during steeping, releasing their flavours. The leaves can be steeped multiple times.

Green teas, including Chinese Gunpowder, are rich in antioxidants and may offer various health benefits. These antioxidants, such as catechins, are believed to contribute to overall well-being.

Like most green teas, Chinese Gunpowder tea contains moderate levels of caffeine. It provides a moderate energy boost without the higher caffeine levels found in some black teas or coffee.

The tightly rolled pellets help protect the tea from external factors, contributing to a longer shelf life compared to more loosely packed teas.

Chinese Gunpowder tea is versatile and can be enjoyed on its own or blended with other ingredients. It is often used as a base for mint tea in some North African and Middle Eastern countries.

Chinese Gunpowder tea has a long history and is considered one of the classic Chinese green teas. Its name reflects its appearance, and the tea has been traded globally for centuries.
