This benchmark steamed Japanese green tea is refreshing and distinctive. High in antioxidants and light, smooth with slight astringency it is crisp, refreshing and strong in green tea flavour.

Our Japanese Sencha comes from coastal Honshu, Japan where it is grown on the Fujiyama mountain slopes in perfect conditions for producing this quintessential Japanese green tea.

Harvested mechanically but sorted by hand, the leaves are lightly steamed prior to rolling and drying in order to develop colour, flavour and antioxidant content. this process results in very fine, delicate and deep-green leaves which infuse for a distinct and strong green tea flavour with slight acridity and dryness.

About Japanese Fukuyu

Sencha is a type of Japanese green tea that is widely popular both in Japan and internationally. It is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and is known for its vibrant green colour, grassy flavour, and refreshing qualities.

Sencha is usually grown in full sunlight, distinguishing it from shaded teas like Gyokuro. The leaves are harvested in the early to late spring, providing a fresher and more delicate flavour compared to later harvests.

The leaves undergo a steaming process immediately after harvesting. This step helps to prevent oxidation and preserve the tea's green colour and flavour. The steaming duration can vary, affecting the tea's final taste.

After steaming, the leaves are rolled to shape them and then dried. This process contributes to the characteristic needle-like appearance of Sencha leaves.

Our Sencha Fukuyu is sourced from Shizuoka on the Fujiyama Mountains. Shizuoka is one of Japan's prominent tea-producing regions, known for its diverse tea offerings. The region's climate, soil, and altitude can influence the flavour profile of teas grown there.

Sencha is known for its vibrant green infusion and a well-balanced flavour profile. It typically exhibits a combination of sweetness, umami, and a slight astringency. The taste may vary based on factors such as the specific cultivar, region of cultivation, and processing methods.

The Fujiyama Mountains (Mount Fuji) is an iconic region in Japan and across the world. The altitude and natural surroundings can contribute to the unique characteristics of the tea.

Teas grown at higher elevations, such as those on mountains, experience different growing conditions that influence the tea's development. Cooler temperatures and varying sunlight exposure contribute to nuanced flavorus.
