First Flush Darjeeling 2020 is of exceptional quality from the Monteviot Tea Garden. It was founded in 1856 in the southern Kurseong valley of Darjeeling.

When infused; it has a beautiful, clear amber liquor with a distinctive floral aroma. This adds depth to the more delicate muscatel top notes which, we know to be typical of an outstanding First Flush Darjeeling. The tasting notes of this tea are; A bright cup, slightly grassy, fresh and yet surprisingly full at the finish; its wonderful unique character and well-rounded profile explains its universal appeal and unprecedented demand.

Due to shutdowns the supply of first class Darjeelings are very limited this year. However the growing conditions were almost ideal with sufficient rain and warmth in the weeks before harvest making the quality excellent.

Please note that it is very important that this tea is not brewed like your traditional black teas. 

To Enjoy

Allow one teaspoon per cup. Switch the kettle off just before it boils or, after boiling allow it to cool for five minutes, ideally down to 85 degrees, before infusing for 3 minutes. Best enjoyed without milk.

About First Flush Darjeeling

First Flush Darjeeling refers to the first plucking or harvest of the year in the Darjeeling tea-growing region of India. This harvest usually occurs in early spring, typically from late February to mid-April, depending on the weather conditions and the altitude of the tea gardens. First Flush Darjeeling teas are highly anticipated and are considered some of the finest and most sought-after teas in the world.

The first flush is the earliest harvest of the tea year in Darjeeling. The tea plants, coming out of their winter dormancy, produce tender, young leaves that contribute to the unique flavour profile of First Flush teas.

The leaves of First Flush Darjeeling are often characterized by their tender, delicate nature. The plucking standard may include the apical bud (the unopened leaf bud) and the two youngest leaves.

First Flush Darjeeling teas undergo minimal oxidation compared to later flushes. The oxidation process is carefully controlled to preserve the fresh, floral, and green character of the leaves. The processing involves withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying.

First Flush Darjeeling is celebrated for its complex and nuanced flavor profile. It often exhibits bright and lively characteristics with pronounced floral notes, often reminiscent of muscatel grapes. The taste can be brisk, with a hint of astringency, and the liquor is typically lighter in color compared to later flushes.
